Life In Focus (LIF)
is a not for profit charity founded by Corina Clarin and
Jeff Kaldma. The primary goal of LIF is to build self-esteem
by photographic expression for less privileged youth throughout
the world.
Our first mission will take us to a village north of Manila
in the Philippines.
Philippines is a country well known for its tropical weather
and its archipelago of 7,107 islands. The land stretches
from the south of China to the northern tip of Borneo and
has over a hundred ethnic groups and a mixture of foreign
influences. To a visitor of Metro Manila, the city is seen
as one of the most westernized of all Asian countries, there
is also a rich underlay of Malay and Spanish culture. The
76.5 million Philippine people have a strong sense of desire
to maintain their ancient heritage without restricting its
openness to foreign artistic influences.
Sadly, one of the realities these people must face is poverty
on the islands. Almost half of the country’s children
live below the poverty line. Although the Philippine government
is making an effort to help the people, economic upheaval,
continuing political instability combined with natural and
ecological disasters have had damaging social effects. These
pressures have led to a breakdown in family life and an
increased vulnerability of the children. Millions of Filipino
children are at risk of violence, drug abuse and exploitation.
Over a two-week period during the month of May 2006, eight
children ranging in age from 10 to 13 years old will be
trained in the many aspects of photography. From the technical
capabilities of snapping a picture with great lighting,
to the more artistic aspects of composition and narrative.
By giving these children the skills and the means of photography,
we hope that they will be able to explore their surroundings
and understand their relationship to it. In addition, we
hope that their newly honed technical and interpersonal
skills will be put to practical use.
Any undertaking as the one briefly outlined is not an easy
ordeal. The finances required to achieve our goals are more
than most individuals are able to provide. For this reason
it is the hope of LIF that businesses and individuals who
have the capability to contribute resources assist in the
sponsorship of our workshop.
